They develop content distributed to the business community via print newspapers and magazines, wire services, web properties, mobile business apps, newsletters, big data and conferences. Their mission is to provide insight and a window on events of interest to their business target market.
Some of their more notable brands include The Wall Street Journal, Factiva, Barron’s, MarketWatch, SmartMoney and All Things D. They also provide an industry benchmark via the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which tracks the performance of 30 select businesses.
iOS Application Development Goals
Dow Jones & Company had a problem. They were getting feedback about mobile apps they had made available on the iTunes app marketplace but they were not able to act and react nimbly to the feedback provided by users of their apps.
This was resulting in a perception that Dow Jones wasn’t particularly interested in what users of their business mobile apps were trying to tell them about their mobile products. This wasn’t due to indifference, rather it stemmed from their lacking a tool that would both aggregate and prioritize reported issues. Rather than relying on anecdotal feedback, it was determined that a software solution would need to be developed.
iOS Application Solution
Dow Jones contracted with Unbounded Solutions to develop a custom application which would leverage Apple’s API (Application Programming Interface) and thus would hook into the reviews and comments made on each of the Dow Jones application pages found in the iTunes app store. The development team devised a method to retrieve this information and then to feed it into the programmers’ bug tracking system.
The Unbounded Solutions team created a web service in node.js which was very lightweight and which was able to pull data on a daily basis.
Results Delivered to Dow Jones & Company
This solution provided the Dow Jones team with a rich and detailed view of all relevant issues for each application. They were now able to categorize and prioritize bugs reported by end users and to schedule patches and updates. This resulted in user ratings in the iTunes store to increase from an average of 3.5 stars to 4.5 stars. The increase in user ratings gave new users additional confidence in the usefulness of the applications, greatly reducing barriers to adoption.
